Yingzhe (Boo) Chen, Soobin Jeon, Qin Shen, and Lillian van Veen.: The Recipe

FLOHAUS Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition, The Recipe, featuring Yingzhe (Boo) Chen, Soobin Jeon, Qin Shen, and Lillian van Veen. The exhibition will be on view from September 17 through October 4, 2026, with an opening reception on September 17 from 6–8 PM. Bringing together four distinct practices, the exhibition begins as a journey into the ingredients and inherited “recipes” through which our bodies come to take form.

The Recipe looks at the body as something continuously adjusted through the forces around us. Like a recipe passed down, ideas of gender, beauty, discipline, and self-image become ingredients in the making of a body. Within contemporary urban life, especially New York’s dense visual culture, these instructions come from everywhere: advertising, fashion & beauty culture, social expectation, etc. At the same time, the exhibition questions the ideals / pressures that contemporary society places onto the body, and how these forces shape the way we see ourselves. Bringing together four artists working across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition asks what happens when these inherited recipes are rewritten.
