about exhibition

DEAS FROM IKEA presents a newly assembled two-channel video installation by Art Club2000, bringing together archival documentation of the collective’s 1994 performance for the Aspirin Design Conference at Cooper Union in New York with footage produced at IKEA for the performance.

“IDEAS from IKEA” was IKEA’s advertising slogan and campaign theme in North America and parts of Europe between 1993 and 1995. The campaign’s commercials concluded with the line: “It’s a big country. Someone’s got to furnish it. IDEAS from IKEA.”

For the Aspirin Design Conference, Art Club2000 used its $500 honorarium to film a field trip to IKEA where the collective purchased the furniture that would become the set for its performance. During the live performance at Cooper Union, this footage was projected onto a screen behind the group as they assembled and then occupied the newly constructed living room set. The furniture was then disassembled, repacked into its original boxes, and returned to IKEA.

The Aspirin Design Conference took place in the Great Hall of the Cooper Union on April 9, 1994.

The two-channel installation was assembled and edited specifically for September Sessions from the surviving video documentation of the performance and the footage produced at IKEA for its original projection.

The seven SMÄLLEN chairs purchased for the installation will be returned to IKEA following the presentation.

The exhibition is kindly supported by Stockholms stad.
