Carole Feuerman: Reborn into the Water

Heydar Aliyev Center hosts Reborn into the Water, a landmark solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed American sculptor Carole Feuerman. On view from January 17, 2026, through January 24, 2027, the exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of the artist’s practice spanning more than five decades.

Featuring over 30 sculptures ranging from life-size to monumental scale, the exhibition includes works from Feuerman’s early practice in the 1970s to recent pieces, including the Tattoo Body series. Water serves as a central metaphor throughout the exhibition, symbolizing purification, renewal, vulnerability, and transformation, and unfolding as a poetic meditation on the relationship between body and spirit.

Feuerman’s iconic Swimmers series reflects her focus on inner strength and resilience, addressing both personal and social challenges. The exhibition also includes Survival of Serena, inspired by Cuban immigrants fleeing in search of asylum. Addressing themes of migration, survival, and humanity’s enduring bond with water, the work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and awarded First Prize at the Beijing Biennale.

A special highlight is the public debut of Ruth (1981), presented for the first time at the Heydar Aliyev Center.

Widely recognized as a pioneer of super-realism, Feuerman emerged in the 1970s with a distinctive approach centered on the female body, intimacy, and psychological presence. Her work has been exhibited internationally in major museums and public spaces and is held in more than 30 museum collections worldwide.
