about exhibition

SLEEPLESS NIGHT explores the unstable boundaries between reality and dream, presence and absence, movement and confinement. Through installation, photography, painting, video, sound, and spatial intervention, Xuhong Shang creates an environment where perception is interrupted and certainty becomes fragile.

Centered around the single-channel video Sleepless Night, the exhibition expands into a physical installation of dark surfaces, fragmented images, linear structures, and layered visual interruptions. Images appear partially concealed, crossed, taped, or suspended within darkness, evoking windows, routes, barriers, memories, and psychological thresholds. The viewer is invited not simply to observe, but to move through a state of uncertainty.

The title SLEEPLESS NIGHT refers to a state between wakefulness and dream, where time stretches, thoughts fragment, and ordinary images acquire emotional weight. Shang reflects this condition through fractured compositions, grayscale imagery, and stark contrasts of light and shadow, creating a world suspended between documentation and imagination.

White linear forms cut across images and extend into the surrounding space, resembling lightning, flashes of thought, or cracks in memory. They connect and disrupt simultaneously, suggesting paths, fractures, signals, restrictions, and moments of anxiety. Alongside recurring references to travel, architecture, airplanes, and transitional spaces, these elements evoke movement while suggesting invisible borders and psychological confinement.

Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, SLEEPLESS NIGHT embraces ambiguity as a space of possibility. The exhibition reflects on how memory, migration, cultural experience, anxiety, nostalgia, and desire shape our perception of reality. The video and sound further extend the installation into a suspended psychological space where the real and imagined overlap.

Ultimately, SLEEPLESS NIGHT considers uncertainty as a condition of contemporary experience. Between darkness and light, movement and stillness, dream and reality, the exhibition invites viewers to enter a space where images remain incomplete, meanings remain open, and the familiar becomes strange.
