Stefan Reiterer: Two Things Can Be True

D. D. D. D. is also pleased to present, in collaboration with Interrobang 11232, Two Things Can Be True, a solo exhibition by Vienna-based artist Stefan Reiterer. 

For Two Things Can Be True, Stefan Reiterer stretches a single exhibition across two galleries—and two boroughs—of New York City. Reiterer’s practice examines the malleability of the supposedly objective images through which we apprehend the physical world: maps, satellite imagery, aerial photography and other technologies of orientation. Through an iterative process of renderings, Reiterer collects and composes satellite and aerial imagery of maps and landscapes which he paints, distorts and re-renders in 3D software, and then paints again on volumized surfaces, returning them once more to physical space as painting, sculpture and installation. Oscillating between analogue and digital, abstraction and representation, his works ask a deceptively simple question: how fixed is the world we think we know?

Stefan Reiterer was born in Waidhofen an der Thaya, Austria, in 1988 and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto. His works have been shown in numerous international exhibitions, including the Museum Gegenstandsfreier Kunst Germany, Belvedere21, Vienna, Secession Vienna, Kunstforum Vienna, Austrian Cultural Forum London, CCA Andratx Mallorca, Galerie CRONE Berlin and Vienna, Future Gallery Berlin, Simulacra Gallery Beijing, Galeria Fran Reus Mallorca, Projeto Fidalga São Paulo, Bikini Wax Mexico City, Black Ball Projects New York, Grande Vista Los Angeles, and SPZ Gallery Prague. They are held in various private and public collections, such as the Artothek des Bundes Österreich, the Collection of the City of Vienna, the des Museums gegenstandsfreier Kunst, the Belvedere Vienna, the Collection of Lower Austria, and the CCA Andratx. Since 2013, he has co-directed the Kunstverein new jörg in Vienna with Axel Koschier. He is represented by Galerie CRONE Berlin/Vienna.
