New Uncanny Gallery is excited to present our first exhibition with an invited curator, Rui Jiang.

We continue our 2024 programming with a performance-based exhibition, Torsos in Rain.

For Torsos in Rain, the artists explore typically static, image-driven narratives – from depictions of historical figures to ruminations on postindustrial landscapes – through their bodies. Performers depart from the fixed boundaries of art history by substituting them with action that spawns from their flesh, stuck within the walls of our abandoned factory, within their dreams, or both. Deleuze’s theory on becoming-animal serves as the philosophical framework of the exhibition, drawing parallels between mutual ecologies that question autonomy and agency. In Deleuze’s words, there is a reality specific to becoming.

New Uncanny Gallery is an artist-run transdisciplinary exhibition space founded in 2024. Located in West Harlem, the project seeks to support artists through exhibition opportunities, public programs, and events. We are a space committed to investigating art that reflects on the nature of the uncanny in all its definitions and ethos — aesthetic, subversive, technological, surreal, cognitive, mythological, or existential. We survey how this concept intersects with our surrounding environment and with various disciplines and visualities.

¹Deleuze’s theory of “becoming-animal” is part of his broader philosophical ideas about the fluid nature of identity and existence. In this theory, “becoming” refers to a process of transformation and change, rather than a fixed state of being. “Becoming-animal” specifically suggests a movement away from rigid human-centered perspectives, embracing a more fluid, interconnected view of life.
